The Fairest: It’s Justin Bieber’s World…We Just Live in It

April 12, 2010 at 1:51 pm 239 comments

Hello, hello!

Can we confess something to you?  We simply don’t get the cult of Justin Bieber.  Where on earth did this kid come from?  Few things have made us feel as out of touch with “today’s youth” (god, we feel like our grandmothers just writing that) as the 16-year-old, mop-topped Canadian phenom.  He’s at the White House!   He’s on the cover of People!  He’s on SNL!  He’s taking over our lives!  We desperately want to understand why girls are obsessed with him, and we long for a day when he’s not the top trending topic on Twitter.  (Alliteration, whee!)  But most importantly, we want to know: how does he keep his hair so shiny…and does he have stock in Crest Whitestrips?  Things to ponder, eh?

In completely unrelated news, it’s been a good week for royal watchers.  First, the interwebs were buzzing this past week after Tina Brown declared on The Daily Beast that Prince William and Kate Middleton are rumored to be announcing their engagement this summer, with a wedding to follow in November. Regardless of whether the news is true or not (we think close, but not quite), it’s caused Wills and Kate speculation to go into overdrive.

And secondly, Grace Kelly—the legendary Oscar winner who moved to Monaco and became a real life Princess—is again everywhere, thanks to an exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert museum celebrating her life through her wardrobe.  Here we have Grace on the cover of Vanity Fair, there we have a juicy article in Tatler detailing her rise to the top of the social heap. It’s been nearly 50 years since Grace’s monumental wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco and nearly 30 since her fatal car crash, but she still fascinates. When it comes to poise, elegance and timelessness…there’s only one Grace.

Now, onto the giveaways!

The best makeup tip I ever received was to lightly swipe a similiarly-colored eyeshadow (with a small foam brush) over eyeliner to set it. When I looked in the mirror after crazy concerts and sweaty school dances to see that my eye makeup was perfectly (seriously!) in tact, I knew this was a tip I’d utilize forever!

The best makeup advice I ever received was to apply my eye shadow primer just below my lower lash line. This helps to hold my shadow in if I use it under the lower lash ( I do it even when not applying shadow to the lower lash line) and keeps it from ending up under my eyes making me look like a zombie!

The best makeup advice I ever received was to NOT match my foundation to my face, but to my chest. That’s how a lot of women with light skin get the discoloration. They are darker through their chest and neck than on their face, so to actually match the face tone creates that “masky” look. Try it, you’ll see what I mean! =)

The best advice I ever received is to find colors that complement my own coloring, instead of buying what’s popular or trendy. For instance I can’t wear light blue eyeshadow (almost no one can) or pink blush, but I can do greens, purples and browns brilliantly. If you wear the wrong shades (warm shades on a cool skin tone or vice versa) you run the risk of looking like a child that got into her mother’s makeup….

The best advice I’ve been told is to always moisturize- even if your skin is oily and/or acne prone! Every type of skin needs moisture. It took me awhile to believe it, but it’s true! Makeup always looks better on healthy, hydrated skin. In fact, drying out oily/acne prone skin can make it worse..

Best and most important makeup advice: Never try to change your skin color with foundation. ALWAYS make sure your foundation is a perfect match. If you’re fair, so be it. If you’re dark, so be it. Don’t try to be something you’re not. When I was a teen, beauty magazines gave advice on how to achieve that “perfect” shade of medium beige, even if you were porcelain.

Happily, it’s a lot easier to get a perfect match these days, especially for darker-skinned gals.

Two pieces of Beauty Advice that work perfectly together: one, you’ll rarely get a perfect match for your skin with one shade of foundation. This is especially true for our beautiful sisters with deeper complexions. Buy a few different shades/finishes & customize. You won’t have to rush out and buy all new foundation every time you get a tan or spend a few weeks working indoors!
Two, after blending your perfect shade on the back of your hand, use a *slightly* damp sponge to “stipple” your base on, blending, blending, blending out from the middle.

I don’t know if it is so much a makeup tip, but an insider tip to fuller lips…
Brush your lips with your toothbrush in small round movements just after you’ve finished brushing your teeth. The brush motion & pressure will increase circulation to your lips, exfoliate your lips, giving you a poutier, softer pucker!

The best makeup advice I’ve ever received, is when I noticed the professional makeup artist sweeping the crease color of the eyeshadow in a horseshoe shape instead of like a long almond. She started at the outer edge of my eyelid and made a tall arc with the brush, almost touching my eyebrow. I do my own eyeshadow that way now, and my eyes always look much larger.

My other best makeup advice is to always wear sunscreen!

The best makeup advice I’ve ever received is to spritz a bit of Evian Mineral Water Spray after applying your powder. It is supposed to give it a “fresher” appearance. However, since I never wanted to shell out the money on the product (and didn’t want to use a regular spray bottle -overly large water droplets-), the advice helped me to come up with my own solution! Dampen a washcloth with cool water, and tightly squeeze out any excess water. Then pat it gently against your face, and voila! your makeup is now set and cake-free!

It sounds silly, but that little piece of advice changed my “makeup life” forever! And maybe my little twist on it will change yours too. 😛

Make your mineral blush or bronzer double as a long lasting lip stain: I find this works best if the blush/bronzer contains only titanium dioxide, iron oxides and other natural mineral pigments. Apply Aquaphor ointment or your favorite lip balm (bonus for using one that has an spf) to your lips, then apply the blush/bronzer to your lips with a q-tip. The q-tip is cheap, easy, handy, and provides a lot of control. You can take some color off on the other side of the q-tip if the color is too dark all over or in certain areas. This lasts me from morning til evening, even through lunch!

Best advice? Having beautiful skin not only comes from how well you treat it on the outside, but how well you treat it from the INSIDE too. After all, you have to start with a quality canvas! Make sure you eat a balanced diet and most importantly of all make sure you drink 6-8 glasses of water throughout the day. Drinking the recommended intake of water everyday moisturizes your skin from the inside out!

I start with clean exfoliated lips, for fuller lips, apply lip liner along the outside of your natural lip line, If you feel your lips are too big, then you put the liner one the inside of your natural lip line fill in your lips with the liner, apply your lip color, blot lips lightly with tissue, dust lips with loose powder and re-apply your lipstick, blot lightly again, add gloss to the middle lower and upper lips for a sexy pout

Best tip: Keep your hands off blemishes, they will clear up faster without the oils from your hands. Use micro fine loose powder instead of cream foundations.

Best advice I’ve recieved is to make my own toner by just using green tea and a little apple cider vinegar. I break out WAY less with a balanced PH level.

    * also good skin = good make up.

After applying bright lipstick, stick your index in your mouth and pull it out! I don’t recommend doing this in a crowd-but it DOES remove any excess lipstick that could end up on your teeth!

I started wearing makeup in the 80’s, when the majority of the girls I went to school with wore thick black heavy eyeliner. My Mom taught me that makeup should always look natural. So instead of the thick eyeliner or dark blush and lipstick the other girls were wearing, I wore colors like corals, pinks, etc…and I blended my eyeliner. After applying my eyeliner to my lower lashes, I take a tissue, wrap it around my finger and gently push my eyeliner up. This way it blends into my lower lashes and I dont look like a racoon. I’m glad I took her advice because now when I look at my high school yearbook, I don’t look as ridiculous as most of the girls 🙂

Use a mild lotion (like Cetaphil) on the end of a Q-tip to wipe away any eye makeup or mascara that is underneath your eyes during the day

the best advice was not to wear excessive make up and for daytime put on moisturizer and while still a teeny weeny wet then apply powdered makeup for a smooth look instead of liquid makeup. Also put a little bit of powder on your eyelashes before applying mascara to make your eyelashes look thicker. Just a smidgeon of powder does the trip.

When using facial products like cleansers , toners, moisturizers , etc .. dont switch from product to product .. like for example dont go between Clinque’s 3 step System to Philosphy’s Purity .. because it might break you out or you might never see accurate results from switching .. *** Test skincare products for 2-3 weeks before saying yes or no .. wait for the results .. 🙂

The best makeup advice I ever got was less is more. There’s no need to spackle on a pound of concealer with a gallon of foundation. To this day I get compliments on my skin and people do not believe I’m wearing anything.

Best makeup advice for me was how to powder oily skin after applying foundation: PRESS the powder into the skin with a velvet puff, don’t merely brush powder on lightly. Oh, and also, blot the shine/oil from your skin using a plain tissue. Press the tissue to your face (don’t rub or wipe) until the shine is gone. Then powder lightly. But the first post-foundation powder is pressed into the skin.

    Works, too!

The best makeup advice I’ve ever received is not so glamorous, but infinitely practical: don’t try and put in contacts after putting on eye makeup.

Trust me, it doesn’t look like a “smoky eye.” More like a watery raccoon.

Best advice for locking mascara in place, particularly if you’re one of those people who cannot find a mascara that stays put…. Use your regular mascara, and before it has dried, coat it with a second layer of a mascara product that forms a “tube” over the eyelashes (such as L’Oreal Double Extend, or Kiss Me Mascara.) Your regular mascara will give you the fullness that you want, and the “tube” brands lock it in place for a long as you want.

The best beauty advice I ever received was, and I know it sounds a bit chessy, but have an “inner smile”. Even though you may not be smiling, your lips and eyes have an upward tilt about them, and your cheeks have a little glow. It also gives you a hint a mystery, with that mischievous glint in your eyes. Everyone will wonder what you’re thinking…

The best beauty advice I have recieved is to exfoliate, moisturize, where sunscreen everytime you will be in the suns rays, apply makeup in natural light, don’t wear eyeshadow that has a blue tone because it will emphasize the blue of your veins that show through the thin skin around the eye, match your foundation to your natural skintone or you will look like you are wearing a mask, and if you are going to wear a dramatic lipstick you should keep the eyes simple with just a light coat of mascara.
Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies and you will have skin that is healthy and beautiful.
